ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title: Lawrence J. Henderson and the Reshaping of American Social Sciences in the 1930s and 1940s
Author: COT Annie L.

History of economic thought sometimes borrows strange paths. How did a Harvard biochemist contributed so strongly in imposing a methodological shift in pre-war American social sciences? What role did economic theory play in this movement ? How could a purely formal conception of general equilibrium cross so many disciplinary boundaries in the 1920s and 1930s and where did its formalisms come from? Based on original archival material, this paper is the last step of a research project on the Harvard " Pareto Seminar ".
