Title: Justice in the Association: Ion Ionescu de la Brad’s Treaty on Sharecropping
Author: Alp Yucel Kaya

In the eve and during the hot days of 1848, economists were questioning both organization of production and distribution among land, labor and capital. Ion Ionescu de la Brad, a moldavian economist and 1848 revolutionary who studied at Ecole agricole de Roville and Conservatoire des arts et métier, was concerned with both of these questions. According to him; in an economic activity, land, labor and capital, each one being associate of each other, invest their own productive resources in return for, respectively, rent, wage and interest. The principle of association results in therefore not only higher production levels but also equality and justice among agents without destructing social hierarchy. There exists however tendencies to monopolize association either on the behalf of capital or labor, causing to deviation from principle of association and justice. Theoretical and policy oriented discussion of Ion Ionescu on sharecropping in large estates of Ottoman Thessaly (la Thessalie agricole telle qu’elle est et telle qu’elle peut être, Istanbul, 1851) shows us how the association of landowners and sharecroppers fails and how it could work successfully. My paper will therefore focus on Ion Ionescu’s concept of association implying justice among the agents of production engaged in the sharecropping.
