ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title: Monetary doctrines and policies in Portuguese mercantilist literature (1500-1750)
Author: CARDOSO José Luis

Paper to be presented in the session proposed by J. Blanc and L. Desmedt on "Monetary policies and ideas in Europe from the 16th to the 18th Century" abstract This paper aims at presenting the most relevant debates concerning monetary problems in Portuguese economic literature of the mercantilist era. It will provide a summary presentation of the main theoretical approaches to both the nature and functions of money, as well as to the relationship between money supply and prices. It will also present the major arguments related to the design and implementation of economic policies conceived to discourage the export of gold and silver and to foster the internal, domestic monetary circulation. The paper is a part of a broader project on the development of monetary thought in different European countries and will be presented in a special proposed session on this very subject.
