ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title: Relevance and cognition
Author: Longuet Stéphane

This paper study Alfred Schütz's phenomenological sociology. This work was used, in general by authors of the Austrian tradition or close to this tradition, to show how social processes can make easier economic coordination. Such analyses refer to the theory of typification almost exclusively. In this paper we show that Schütz's theory of relevance provides us an analysis of the cognitive processes. This analysis is original because it leads to a theory of action different from that of Mises and from that of Hayek, as of the theories of action based on substantive rationality. However Schütz's theory seems able to sustain some aspects of Lachmann's analysis. We conclude by showing that: 1) this theory results in underlining the limits of economic coordination, 2) the theory of the cognitive processes brings closer to Schütz to recent currents of cognitive sciences
