ABSTRACT OF PAPER
Title: THE JOURNAL MONEY AND CREDIT AND THE DISSEMINATION OF IDEAS OF SOCIAL MARKET ECONOMY IN SPAIN
Author: Jiménez Varela Marta , Sánchez Lissen Rocío, Sanz Teresa
After the Civil War (1936-39), the scientific output of an economic nature in Spain was relatively low, if we consider that the first Faculty of Economics of the Spanish public university is not created until 1943. The political and economic isolation along with the censorship imposed by the government of Franco, hindered intellectual activity during the post-war era. However, in June 1942 Money and Credit was created, which involved a strong reaction against that cultural lethargy, becoming one of the leading journals of reference on economic analysis in Spain during decades. Its articles, book reviews, conferences and symposiums, fall within the scope of a liberal market economy. In this work we propose, from the selection of twenty articles published in this journal between 1943 and 1981, to analyze the spread and influence in Spain of the principles of the Social Market Economy and its principal authors, including professors of economics, politicians and intellectuals of German, Spanish and French nationality, as Eucken, Röpke and Rueff. In these almost four decades, the content of articles has evolved over time. In the forties, the most popular topics on Money and Credit were postwar economic problems, the Marshall Plan and the German war reparations, together with the suitability of introducing a liberal system of international cooperation to boost European reconstruction. As in Germany was consolidating economic recovery after the monetary reform of 1948, which led to the so-called German economic miracle, success of Social Market Economy in that country began to spread in the journal. Other topics of interest from this area, also disseminated in Money and Credit, were a concern for social issues, environmental degradation and quality of life in cities, along with other monetary policy issues such as the stabilization of exchange rates and inflation control. In 2013 the latest volume of Money and Credit was published under the title "Taking Stock: 25 years of economic analysis". Therefore, our aim is to take stock of how Social Market Economy ideas spread in Spain through the journal.
