ABSTRACT OF PAPER
Title: Three reviews of Piero Sraffa’s Production of Commodities
Author: Naldi Nerio
The paper considers three reviews of Piero Sraffa’s Production of Commodities published in Italy between Autumn 1960 and Spring 1961. These reviews were published respectively by the marxist journals Rinascita and Società and and by the academic journal Giornale degli economisti. The authors were an Italian marxist employed by an Italian bank (Rodolfo Banfi), a British non-academic marxist (John Eaton – alias Stephen Bodington) and an Italian non-academic economist interested in the development of both marxist thought and neoclassical economics (Claudio Napoleoni). The paper illustrates the content of these reviews, documents (some of them already known, others recently discovered) relating to the circumstances of their publication and discussions which took place behind the scenes which may help to understand the way Sraffa’s book was received by marxists both in Italy and in Britain and Sraffa’s own views and expectations regarding the relations between his book and Marx’s thought and the way his book could have been received in both academic and marxist circles.
